SPOON-FED (SERIES), 2020

This work considers the positive, encouraging messages we are spoon-fed, from birth, about consumption, competition and capitalism. The spoon, one of our most basic and necessary possessions, works as a strong metaphor, carrying notions of force-feeding, of nurture and bodily intimacy.

SPOON-FED: THE OSSUARY (Porcelain, iron-oxide. Dimensions variable)

Reminiscent of a pile of old bones, this set of spoons carries messages that have lost all sense of useful meaning.  They are far from the refined silverware of fine dining, although their porcelain nature does tie them to that place.

SPOON-FED: UNFIT FOR PURPOSE (Stoneware, glaze, fly, wax, hair (artist's own), latex, clingfilm, PVA, caterer's trolley)

Oversized serving spoons made in a plaster press-mould, from materials unfit for any sensible feeding purpose.  Too big to fit into any person's mouth these gross spoons would melt, disintegrate, bend, seep or peel in contact with food, and few people would want them near their lips.
